Varieties of Grape

Provençal vines ideal for well balanced organic red wines

We have seven different types of grape in our vineyard: Cabernet-Sauvignon, Carignan, Cinsault, Counoise, Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah.
The vines themselves are on average 25 years old: the oldest (Cabernet-Sauvignon, Grenache, Carignan, Cinsault and Counoise) are more than 40 years old, and the youngest (Syrah and Mourvèdre) were planted eight years ago.

cabernet sauvignonCabernet Sauvignon: this world renowned grape brings stability and structure, but also depth and finesse, to the wines. It brings out the aromas of cedar, black-currant and liquorice.

Carignan: brought to France from Spain in the 12th century, this variety is now cultivated extensively in the South of France. Produced in relatively low quantities its wines are colourful and subtle.

cinsault.jpg

Cinsault: considered as one of the Midi’s  oldest grapes, Cinsault is light, and low on acid and on alcohol. A subtle wine produced in modest quantities.

counoise.jpg

Counoise: Another grape originating from Spain, this variety introduced to France by Counesa, vice-legat to Pope Urban V, resident in Avignon. In recent years the Counoise has been re-discovered by wine-makers in the south of France. Harvested when fully ripe the wines are fresh and acidulous.

grenache.jpgGrenache: Yet another grape originating from Spain, this grape responds best to hot summers, and produces full-bodied wines strong in alcohol..

mourvedre.jpgMourvèdre: Cultivated in Provence since the 16th century, its wines are rich in tannin, with fruity aromas and a hint of pepper and spices.

syrah.jpg

Syrah: originally from Persia, this variety is one of the oldest in the World. The addition of Syrah brings a subtlety and elegance to the wines, with aromas of violets, spices and berries.
