Our Story

A new life in Provence

In the year 2000, after 20 years in the financial world, English trader Rupert Birch decided to turn his back on banking and devote himself to a truly worthy cause: the creation of a vineyard and the production of a new wine, source of so much delight.

On the 60-acre vineyard that he bought in the heart of the Coteaux d’Aix, the Domaine de la Brillane was conceived and realised; the manor-house, the production facilities and the wine cellar……

From the very first day Rupert adopted an organic approach, convinced of the rightness and good sense of such a system.

In 2007 we had a dream too; to get back to our roots, which meant a return to the countryside for Corinne, and the South of France for Emmanuel.

We had heard of the “Domaine de la Brillane”: we fell in love immediately with the vineyard nestled below the “Sainte Victoire”, and with its elegant and original wines.

In 2010 we bought the Domaine and are humbly trying to perpetuate the traditional methods of organic wine production while maintaining the sophistication of the wines, source of such pleasure.

We are delighted that Brice Velluet and Bernadette Tourelle will continue their roles as master of the cellar and oenologist respectively, as they have done since the founding of the Domaine.

We are also pleased to reassure our clients that the Domaine’s established principles of organic culture will be respected with the utmost rigour; such as regular mechanical weeding which replaces the need for pesticides and chemical fertilizers.

Our motto is: total respect for our soil, our vines, our grapes……and our wines.
